Welcome to the Oak Grove School Library page. Our mission is to encourage a lifelong love of reading, and to teach all users to become effective information seekers. Research shows that reading to and with your children from an early age helps them become better readers. It's also fun! If you don't have a library card come on in and sign up for one. It's free.

Student Writing
From time to time. when students have produced a publishable piece of work, the writing will be posted on the blog. Here, on the library page, each student who publishes in my writing skills group has their own page, listed on the right. Check out the latest addition. Erick has written an essay on why people should always wear seat belts. If his piece doesn't convince you, I will be surprised!

Your Recommendations
Read a good book review in the New York Times? Heard about a title on the radio or from a friend? Been cruising the shelves of your local bookstore and found something you just can't wait to read but don't want to spend the money buying?
Give me a recommendation.
Our shelves are stocked with fiction and non-fiction titles for readers in grades k-6 that support the curriculum as well as all sorts of interests. There are also professional books for teachers and some parenting books.
If you know of a book you think we should have in the library, please give me a recommendation. You can e-mail me, or call, or send a note in with your child.

Confucius Say
This month we are thinking about the Guiding Principle of RESPECT. The quote of the week is "do to others as you would have them do to you". This is also known as The Golden Rule. Ever wonder where that saying came from? Confucius!
Confucius was a minor government official in the ancient Chinese province of Lu more than 2,500 years ago. He was also a very wise man who had lots of bold ideas about reform and the way people should act in society. His sayings and advice were so useful that they have been handed down for 25 centuries and are still being used today.
There is a great book by Russell Freedman (a brilliant author who has written about many interesting topics) called Confucius:The Golden Rule. It talks about the life and times of Confucius, many of his incredible "sayings" and is packed with gorgeous art reminiscent of the era.
It's available in the library!

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITTANICA ONLINE
Just a quick heads up that if you try to use the online Encyclopedia Brittanica site, you will find you can't get in. It's a renewal issue and should be resolved soon. Thanks for your patience. Meanwhile, try the World Book site. It's pretty awesome.
